 API Vision 2016

Outlining an innovative vision for API during the recently concluded APICON 2016 at Hyderabad, President, API,  Dr. Gurpreet S. Wander, laid the roadmap for a stronger, collaborative and futuristic API by outlining the concept of MERA; where each alphabet denotes a specific vision which requires collaborative engagement by all the physicians.

HOW MERA UNFOLDS:

M-  Membership Acceleration Drive

There are over 50,000 physicians in India and API’s membership stands at 18,000. We need to increase our memberships numbrs by including all our potential members and make the organisation robust

E-   Education for Competence, Compassion & Communication

The main forte of API is post graduate education in internal medicine and its subspecialties. The annual conference and a large numbers of CMEs by state chapters and city branches help in acquiring the latest knowledge, skills and technological advances. My concern is that despite our best efforts there is a huge and growing mistrust and dissatisfaction between patient and the doctor. This “doctor patient mistrust syndrome” must be addressed. There are three C's  essential for patient care and satisfaction – competence, compassion and communication. Improving competence has been our main thrust in education. My submission is towards increasing the weight of compassion and communication in our programs.  Communicating effectively with patients and families is a cornerstone of providing quality health care.

 R- Research Reaffirmed.

I am happy to announce that the research wing of API “The Physician Research Forum” has already taken shape under the able leadership of my predecessors. We plan to emphasize on epidemiological and clinical research. I am proposing the creation of  an autonomous body like an Institute for Clinical Excellence, to work in collaboration with various associations for overcoming interdisciplinary limitations and provide consensus based guidelines, incorporating the requirements of all stakeholders.

A- Advisory & Advocacy.

An enormous knowledge bank exists  within the association.

I propose to form an API Advisory Forum for assertive leadership which can influence , guide and work with the government to tackle healthcare challenges of  India effectively

Friends, let us not forget that a physician is not only a scientist, but an artist, humanist and social worker, all rolled into one.
